Celebrating Our Educators:

Teacher Appreciation Week at the Santa Monica Family YMCA

Teacher Appreciation is celebrated the second week of May each year, lifting up the hard-working people who shape more than classrooms. At the YMCA, our Youth Development programs are filled with passionate leaders who pour into their students, supporting youth from the cradle to career.

Across our community, teachers show up each day not just to educate, but to connect, to encourage, and to help young people discover who they are and who they can become. They are steady presences in moments of uncertainty, champions of curiosity, and quiet builders of confidence. Whether it’s in an early learning classroom, an afterschool program, or a camp setting, Y educators create spaces where every child feels seen, supported, and inspired to grow.

Join us in celebrating the incredible teachers who inspire, encourage, and shape future generations every single day. Their patience, kindness, wisdom, and heart shape minds and make a better future possible with every small gesture & encouraging word!

How Do Teachers Support the Community?

Aside from parents, teachers are the ultimate role model for students. From preschool – like our very own Early Learning Center – through high school and college, a person has dozens of educators supporting them, enlightening them, and challenging them to grow to their fullest potential. Teachers help shape a child’s sense of wonder, creating safe environments where students can ask questions, make mistakes, and discover their passions. Educators help shape our communities for generations, giving kids essential skills they will need for success in the classroom and beyond. From gross motor skills to literacy, social-emotional learning to critical thinking, teachers play a role in developing the future leaders.

Teachers are willing to do so much to support their students and families, selflessly dedicating their time to their passion for youth and education. Whether that looks like long hours grading papers, building lesson plans, or finding creative ways of teaching tough topics, educators pour so much of themselves into their work and the children they serve.

How Can We Support Teachers?

Thanking a teacher for their help and support of your child goes a long way to make teachers feel appreciated. Simple acts of kindness go a long way in showing your support of educators and should not be saved for one week a year. When you share the impact that a teacher has had on you or your child, you validate a teacher’s skills, passion, and dedication in a way that fills their cup and yours too. Teachers have had an impact on every person in our community, helping to shape our understanding of the world around us, our civic responsibility, and encouraging us to find our passions.

Every one of us has a story about how a teacher encouraged us to keep going, to try something new, or to be ourselves – those stories are just a glimpse into the extraordinary work teachers do every day. Behind each of us, there is an educator who understood that teaching is not just about teaching a curriculum – it’s about connection, belonging, and the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive.

To all the educators in our YMCA and community: thank you for the countless ways you show up, the lives you shape, and the communities you continue to strengthen.
