Welcoming Week 2026: For 99 Years, the Y Has Been a Place to Belong

WELCOMING WEEK:

For 99 Years, the Y Has Been a Place to Belong

Every day at the Santa Monica Family YMCA, we see what it looks like when someone finds their place. It might start with a simple visit, like a parent signing up a child, or a new neighbor walking through our doors, but over time, those small moments grow into something bigger: connection, community and a true sense of belonging.

For over 99 years, the YMCA has been a place where people come not just to participate, but to belong. That’s why Welcoming Week, celebrated each September in partnership with Welcoming America, is such a natural extension of our mission.

Long before “belonging” became a national conversation, the Y was already supporting people navigating new beginnings. From serving individuals arriving in growing cities in the 1800s to welcoming families building new lives today, the YMCA has long been a bridge, connecting people to opportunity and to one another.

Here in Santa Monica & Venice, we see the impact of that every day. New neighbors bring fresh perspectives, cultures and energy that strengthen our community in ways both visible and deeply personal. Just as important are the connections that form: conversations in a lobby, friendships built in programs, neighbors becoming part of something larger than themselves.

During Welcoming Week (September 10–19), the Santa Monica Family YMCA will host a whole week of fun, engaging events,  creating opportunities for people to come together and celebrate what unites us.

Because belonging isn’t just a nice idea, it’s essential. When people feel connected, they are healthier, more engaged and more likely to thrive. And when individuals thrive, communities do too. For over 99 years, the YMCA has helped create those connections. And today, we’re proud to continue that work across Santa Monica, Venice, and Camp Big Bear.

“At the Santa Monica Family YMCA, we truly believe that belonging begins with us and that our community is stronger when everyone feels welcome and collaborates for the common good.” said Caity King, Mission Advancement Director. “We are proud to participate in Welcoming Week, showcasing how people from all backgrounds come together in communities both large and small to build stronger connections, This is a time to celebrate the shared values that unite us as neighbors, parents, and colleagues, making our community more welcoming to all.”

In our 2026 Welcoming Week Calendar, you’ll find a variety of offerings lifting up cultures that contribute to our vibrant community. Whether you choose to join us for a group exercise class inspired by cultures from around the world, our Cultural Story Slam, the Cultural Cooking Exchange, or join us for our big event on Thursday, the Welcoming Week Get-Together, we hope you get curious about your neighbors and how everyone’s heritage, culture, and spirit contribute to the vibrant community we call home. Below, you’ll find more details about each event during Welcoming Week!

Want to showcase your culture? Connect with us!

The goal of this annual event is to invite an exchange of cultures and traditions from all over, learning from our neighbors and building deeper, more welcoming relationships. Our YMCA is incredibly diverse, serving people from all backgrounds, languages, countries of origin, and identities – and what a beautiful thing that is! We want to lift up the value that our community members bring to The Y and we’re inviting you to our Welcome Week Cultural Showcase. At this community fair, neighbors will bring treats and snacks from their cultures, enjoy engaging arts & crafts, enjoy a cultural dance performance, and peruse cultures showcased by fellow neighbors. If you are interest in highlighting your culture or sharing treats & snacks from your people, please fill out this form!
