Leading With Purpose:
Pam Andrews on Protecting What Matters Most
When Pam Andres started as a lifeguard at the Santa Monica Family YMCA, she never imagined it would become a career. More than three decades later, she is now the Senior Risk Management Director and a guiding force behind the Santa Monica Family YMCA’s reputation as a trusted, safe place committed to protecting its community.
Her career has spanned eight roles across departments, including Youth Development, Early Childhood Education, and Human Resources. That depth of experience eventually led her into Risk Management, a shift that aligned with The Y’s longstanding commitment to child protection. In 2016, Pam became a Praesidium Guardian, helping The Y formalize its already strong culture of safety.
“Even before the Praesidium Guardian program existed, we were focused on child safety. It’s been part of who we are for decades,” Pam says, reflecting on The Y’s long-standing commitment to safety.
More recently, Pam led the Santa Monica Family YMCA to earn Praesidium Accreditation, a nationally recognized validation of strong youth protection practices. This extensive effort reviewed policies, facility design, and staff & volunteer preparedness to ensure The Y maintains the highest safety standards.
Pam’s dedication to the community extends beyond her role in risk management. She’s joined the Santa Monica Family YMCA’s consistent support during times of crisis, like the recent LA fires.
“We’ve always answered the call when our community needs us,” Pam says, citing the Y’s efforts from hosting blood drives to offering resources during evacuations.
Pam also credits CEO Hodge Patterson for strengthening the Y’s local impact. “Hodge is a big connector,” she says. “Since he came in, we’ve expanded our team and forged strong partnerships to meet our community’s evolving needs.”
After 36 years, Pam continues to take pride in The Y’s ability to adapt. “The Y really does it all, from child protection to food programs to youth sports to senior fitness. It’s an organization that responds to what’s needed, and I’m proud to be a part of that.”
