Diabetes effects 1 in 10 Los Angeles County residents costing an estimated $6 billion each year. It is the leading cause of heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and nerve disease. Many cases of Type 2 diabetes can be avoided if discovered and treated early. This is known as pre-diabetes, which is seen in about 79 million American adults. Pre-diabetes is, in most cases, is a reversible condition where blood glucose levels are higher than normal. People with pre-diabetes are likely to develop Type 2 diabetes within 10 years, unless preventative action is taken, and that is where the Santa Monica Family YMCA can help.
Our Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is part of the Centers for Disease Control Diabetes Prevention program and is also endorsed by the Diabetes Prevention and Control Alliance. Research conducted by the National Institutes of Health has proven that programs like ours can reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by almost 60%. We will work with you through our DPP to be sure you receive the best possible support and advice.
We’ll teach you ways to eat healthier, increase physical activity and how to make other changes to improve your overall health and well-being. Lifestyle changes like this can prevent or delay development of Type 2 diabetes for those at high risk.
Session Topics Include:
- Â Ways to Eat Less Fat
- Â Tip the Calorie Balance
-  Take Charge of What’s around you
- Â Problem Solving
- Â Four Keys to Healthy Eating Out
- Â You Can Manage Stress
- Ways to Stay Motivated

Cancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on those affected. The Y and the LIVESTRONG Foundation have joined together to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a research-based physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their whole body health goals.
Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body.
Who can participate in LIVESTRONG at the YMCA?
The program is open to adult cancer survivors, 18 years and older, who qualify to participate through an intake interview and can commit to participating consistently for the 12-week program.
How does the program work?
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA meets two times per week for 75-90 minutes per session. Days and times of the class may change throughout the year as different participants express interest.
When does the class start?
TBA
What is the cost of the program?
The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a no-cost to participants program. In addition, cancer survivors and their immediate family, will receive a complimentary 12-week membership to our facility. The family membership is included so that the participant’s family may join them on this health journey.
